Bike Taxi Captain (Rapido, Uber Moto, Ola Bike)
बाइक टैक्सी कैप्टन (रैपिडो, उबर मोटो)
Carrying passengers on your own two-wheeler through an app, paid per ride. Whether it is even legal depends on your state, so check that before anything else.
The short answer
Check the law in your state first. In Maharashtra the three big apps lost their provisional licences in March 2026 and the state allows only electric bike taxis, so riding a petrol bike for an app there can get your vehicle seized. Where it is permitted, it suits someone who already owns a bike and wants income in spare hours. We found no reliable figure for what captains earn.

You switch on the captain app, accept a ride request, pick up the passenger and drop them, usually within a few kilometres. The fare is set by the app. Unlike delivery work, you carry a person, so your riding, a spare helmet and your behaviour are rated on every trip, and an accident has heavier consequences. Demand peaks during office hours, near metro and railway stations. The big legal question is that most private two-wheelers have white number plates and are registered for personal use, while carrying passengers for money is commercial use. States have answered that question differently, and some have changed their answer more than once.
What you need
- Age 18 or above.
- A two-wheeler in good condition with RC, insurance and a pollution certificate. Some states require it to be electric or to carry a commercial registration.
- A valid two-wheeler driving licence.
- A second helmet for the passenger.
- An Android smartphone with data, Aadhaar, PAN and a bank account.
- Petrol or charging money until the first payout.

How the money works
The passenger pays the fare shown in the app, in cash or online. The platform takes its share, either as a percentage of each fare or as a fixed daily or weekly access fee, and the rest is yours. Petrol, servicing, tyres and fines are your own expense.
- Rapido has moved its auto and cab drivers to a fixed daily fee in place of commission. We could not confirm which model applies to bike captains in each city: check inside the app.
- Incentives depend on completing a set number of rides in a day or week.
- The ride back from a drop point with no passenger earns nothing but still burns fuel.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
A part-time captain in Bengaluru posted that he was left with about ₹1,820 after petrol from four days of rides, with no commission deducted at the time.

In Mumbai's metropolitan region the State Transport Authority fixed the bike taxi fare at ₹15 for the first 1.5 km and ₹10.27 for each km after that. This is what the passenger pays, before the platform's share and your fuel.

What we could not find
- Any survey or company disclosure of what bike taxi captains earn in a month. Blog figures of ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 have no stated method, so we have not used them.
- The commission or access fee for bike captains in each city.
- The current position in states other than Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Work out your own number
Put in the rates you are actually offered. The starting values are examples, not what you will get.
Fill in the empty boxes to see the result. We have left them empty because we found no figure we could trust.
For 'pay per ride' enter what reaches you after the platform's share. Count the empty kilometres back from each drop in 'km ridden'.
Count the hours you are logged in and waiting, not only the hours you are riding. Vehicle wear, repairs, traffic fines and days without work come out of the same money.
Is it legal where you live?
Maharashtra
The state's rules allow bike taxis only in cities above one lakh population and only on electric two-wheelers, through licensed aggregators. Ola, Uber and Rapido were given provisional licences for the Mumbai region in September 2025. The government revoked all three on 9 March 2026, citing missing documents, complaints from women passengers and the use of petrol bikes. We found no report of a permanent licence since. Until one is granted, riding for these apps in Maharashtra risks a fine and seizure of the vehicle.

Karnataka
A division bench of the High Court lifted the state's ban in January 2026 and held that motorcycles can be registered as transport vehicles, subject to registration and permits under the Motor Vehicles Act. The state has appealed to the Supreme Court, and the transport department still maintains that private vehicles cannot carry passengers for hire without a permit. Treat it as allowed but unsettled.

Other states
Rules differ and change. Some states have an aggregator policy, some allow only electric bikes, and some have no rule at all. Ask your RTO, in person, whether a private two-wheeler may be used as a bike taxi before you register on any app.
As of Oct 2026
How to start
- Ask your RTO whether bike taxis are permitted in your city and on what kind of vehicle. Do this before installing any app.
- Ask your insurer whether your policy covers carrying a paying passenger. Most private policies are written for personal use.
- If it is permitted, install the platform's own captain app and upload your licence, RC, insurance, Aadhaar, PAN and bank details.
- Buy a second ISI-marked helmet.
- Work a week of morning and evening peaks near a station, note rides, payout, petrol and hours, and put them in the calculator.
What is good about it
- Uses a bike you already own, in hours you choose.
- Short trips with steady demand near stations and offices in the peak hours.
- Paid the same day when passengers pay cash.
What is hard about it
- The legal position is unstable. A state can ban or restrict the service overnight, as Maharashtra and Karnataka both have.
- Riding where it is not permitted risks a fine, seizure of the bike and a refused insurance claim.
- You carry a passenger: an accident can mean injury to someone else and a claim against you.
- Petrol, wear and the empty ride back all come out of the fare.
- No reliable public data on earnings, so you cannot check a recruiter's promise against anything.
Traps to avoid
- Agents who promise a 'guaranteed' monthly income and charge a fee to activate a captain ID.
- Being told that an app ID makes it legal. The app letting you log in does not mean your state permits it.
- E-bike lease offers tied to bike taxi work. Check the daily rent against real ride income first, and who pays if the service is stopped.

Questions people ask
Is Rapido bike taxi legal in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra?+
As of October 2026, no app holds a bike taxi licence in Maharashtra. Provisional licences given to Ola, Uber and Rapido in September 2025 were revoked on 9 March 2026. The state's rules permit only electric bike taxis run by licensed aggregators. Check the Maharashtra transport department's latest notice, because this can change.
Can I use my white number plate bike for Rapido?+
That depends on your state. A white plate means the vehicle is registered for private use, and carrying passengers for money is commercial use. Some states permit it under an aggregator policy and others treat it as an offence. Your RTO can tell you which applies.
How much can a Rapido captain earn in a day?+
We found no reliable figure. The only account we could trace was one part-time rider in Bengaluru who kept about ₹1,820 after petrol over four days. Use the calculator with a week of your own rides.
Does my bike insurance cover a passenger on a bike taxi ride?+
Often not. Private two-wheeler policies are written for personal use, and an insurer may refuse a claim if the bike was being used for hire. Ask your insurer in writing, and check what accident cover the platform provides for you and the passenger.
