A driving school teaches beginners to drive in a car fitted with dual controls, over a course of about two to three weeks, covers traffic rules and road signs, and guides students through learner's and permanent licence applications. It needs a licence from the transport department, a suitable car, a qualified instructor and a small office. It suits an experienced, patient driver who meets the instructor requirements. One car can train about twenty students a month, so income is limited by the number of cars and instructors. The profit shown assumes the owner also instructs. The hard parts are the licensing conditions, wear and accident risk on the training car, fuel cost, and many schools competing on fees.

Skills needed: Long driving experience, patience and the instructor qualification the motor vehicle rules require (commonly a motor mechanics certificate or equivalent).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Students and young adults
  • Women and homemakers learning to drive
  • New car buyers
  • People needing commercial driving training (a separate, larger set-up)

Ways to sell

  • A visible office and a marked training car
  • Referrals from past students
  • Tie-ups with car dealers and colleges
  • Google Business listing

Season: Enrolments rise in summer vacations and after exam results; slower in the monsoon.

Competition: Other local schools and branded schools run with car makers. Patient instructors, punctual sessions and honest licence guidance bring referrals.

Risks and how to handle them

Accident during training

Use dual controls, start on quiet roads, keep proper insurance and never leave a learner alone at the wheel.

Licence suspended for breaking conditions

Keep registers, renew on time and do not promise licences without tests.

High wear and repair cost on the car

Budget for clutch, brakes and tyres, service on schedule and choose a model with cheap parts.

Fee undercutting by other schools

Offer flexible timings, women instructors where possible and refresher courses.

Tips from the trade

  • Early-morning and evening slots fill first; plan the instructor's day around them.
  • Refresher courses for licence holders who are afraid to drive are a growing extra.
  • A second car roughly doubles capacity; add it only when the first is full.
