A car wash centre cleans vehicles with a high-pressure washer and foam, vacuums and wipes the interior, and offers extras such as polish, wax, interior shampoo and coatings. A manual single- or double-bay centre needs a plot or shed on a road with water, drainage and three or four workers. It suits someone with access to roadside space where many cars pass or park. Materials cost little; rent, labour and water are the real costs, so the number of cars washed each day decides the result. The hard parts are water supply and waste-water rules, rain and weekdays with few cars, workers who leave, and cheap doorstep washers.

Skills needed: No formal qualification. Detailing (polishing, coating) needs training to avoid damaging paint.

Loan route

Mudra loan (Tarun)

Own money ₹67,284 · Loan ₹6.06 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹14,119

No collateral, no subsidy.

How Mudra works

PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹1.01 lakh (general, urban) to ₹2.35 lakh (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹11,766–₹9,413.

Own money 5–10%. Applicant must be at least 8th pass for this project size. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Private car and bike owners nearby
  • Taxi and cab drivers
  • Car dealers and used-car sellers
  • Offices and fleets on monthly contract

Ways to sell

  • A visible roadside location
  • Monthly wash memberships
  • Tie-ups with housing societies and offices
  • Google Business listing and reviews

Season: Fewer washes on rainy days, but more mud-cleaning and interior work in the monsoon; peaks before festivals and weddings.

Competition: Roadside washers, doorstep cleaners, fuel-station washes and detailing studios. Careful work with no scratches and reasonable waiting time bring customers back.

Risks and how to handle them

Water shortage or a ban on using fresh water for washing

Secure a reliable source, use pressure washers and foam that save water, and plan for recycling.

Scratches or damage claims from customers

Inspect and note defects before washing, use clean mitts and cloths, and train every worker.

Idle staff on rainy days and weekdays

Sell monthly memberships and fleet contracts; add detailing work that does not depend on weather.

Complaints about waste water on the road

Build proper drainage with an oil-water trap from the start.

Tips from the trade

  • Memberships give predictable income and fill weekdays.
  • Detailing (polish, interior shampoo, coating) earns far more per hour than basic washes once you are trained.
  • Clean cloths matter more than expensive shampoo; a dirty cloth scratches paint.

Questions people ask

Is an automatic car wash machine needed?+

No. Most small centres are manual, with pressure washers and foam. Guides put automatic bays at ₹15 lakh and above, which suits only high-traffic sites.

How much water does a car wash use?+

It varies with method and equipment. Pressure washers and foam use much less than an open hose. Measure your own use, because water is a real monthly cost and may be restricted in summer.

How much investment is needed to start a car washing and detailing business?+

About ₹6.73 lakh for a small unit: ₹4.9 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹1.05 lakh for set-up costs and ₹77,841 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a car washing and detailing business make per month?+

At 45% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.25 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹43,731 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹14,119, the owner keeps about ₹29,612 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for car washing and detailing?+

High-pressure washer (₹50,000–₹2 lakh); Air compressor (₹20,000–₹50,000).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for car washing and detailing?+

With a project cost of about ₹6.73 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹6.06 lakh falls under Mudra Tarun. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹2.35 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

What licences are required for car washing and detailing?+

Mandatory: Shop and Establishment registration. Depending on your set-up you may also need: Local body trade licence and land-use permission, Pollution control consent and waste-water norms, Permission to draw groundwater, GST registration, Udyam registration.
