What you will actually do

  • Granting line clear and operating signals and points for arriving and departing trains
  • Coordinating with section control, adjacent stations, loco pilots and train managers
  • Ensuring safety rules are followed during shunting and track maintenance blocks
  • Supervising pointsmen and other station staff
  • Handling passenger announcements, complaints and emergencies at small stations
  • Maintaining the train signal register and other safety records

A typical day

You work an eight-hour shift in the station master's cabin with a panel showing tracks and signals. Every train needs a sequence done exactly right: take line clear, set the route, clear the signal, record the timings. Between trains you answer the control phone and deal with staff and passenger issues. At a wayside station you may be the only official on duty at 3 a.m. A mistake can cause an accident, so concentration is non-negotiable.
