What you will actually do

  • Supervising technicians and track or depot staff
  • Planning and inspecting maintenance of track, bridges, coaches, locomotives, signals or overhead lines
  • Ensuring safety procedures during work on running lines
  • Indenting and accounting for materials and stores
  • Attending and reporting on failures and accidents
  • Keeping inspection and maintenance records

A typical day

As a permanent-way JE you start with a push-trolley or foot inspection of your section, set the day's work for the gangs, and return to the office to deal with material indents and reports. Depot and shed JEs run a shift of technicians turning out trains on time. When something fails at night, the phone rings and you go. You are answerable for every defect in your jurisdiction.
