What you will actually do

  • Checking the train's formation, brake power and documents before departure
  • Exchanging signals with the loco pilot and station staff
  • Protecting the train in case of a breakdown or accident
  • Supervising shunting and attaching or detaching wagons at yards
  • Recording the journey and reporting defects

A typical day

There is no fixed timetable for goods trains. You get a call a couple of hours before departure, report to the lobby, and ride alone in the brake van at the back, which has a hard seat and no toilet. A trip may take six hours or fourteen, with long halts on loop lines. At the other end you rest in a running room and work a train back. Days at home are irregular.
