Security Guard
सिक्योरिटी गार्ड · सुरक्षा रक्षक
Guarding a housing society, office, mall, bank or factory for a security agency. Open to almost anyone who is fit, with a monthly wage and long shifts.
The short answer
One of the few steady wage jobs open with little schooling, and it is available in every town. The pay should be at least the minimum wage, with provident fund and ESI, but many small agencies pay less and deduct for uniforms. Join a licensed agency and check your payslip.

Guards are employed by private security agencies and posted at a client's site: a gate, a lobby, an ATM, a warehouse. The work is watching entry and exit, keeping a register, checking vehicles, doing rounds at night and raising an alarm. Shifts are commonly long and include nights, Sundays and festivals. Agencies must be licensed under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, and are required to train their guards. With experience a guard can become a head guard or supervisor, and armed guards with a gun licence are paid more.
What you need
- Age 18 or above.
- Age 18 to 65 and medically fit, as reported for licensed agencies. Many ask for Class 8 or Class 10; check with the agency.
- Physical standards under the rules, reported as a minimum height of 160 cm for men and 150 cm for women.
- Police verification of your character and address.
- Aadhaar, PAN, a bank account and passport photographs.
- Training arranged by the agency: reported as at least 100 hours in class and 60 hours in the field over 20 working days, shorter for ex-servicemen and former police.

How the money works
The agency pays a monthly wage into your bank account, based on days worked. It should not be below the minimum wage notified for security work where you are posted, with overtime at a higher rate for extra hours. Provident fund and ESI contributions should be deducted and matched by the employer.
- Which minimum wage applies depends on the site: a central-government rate for central establishments, the state's rate elsewhere.
- A 12-hour shift should mean four hours of overtime pay. Many agencies pay a flat amount instead; ask.
- Check that provident fund is actually being deposited, using your UAN.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
For watch and ward work without arms in central-government establishments, the minimum wage from 1 April 2026 in the largest cities (Area A) is ₹1,008 a day: ₹637 basic and ₹371 variable dearness allowance. Rates in smaller places and under state rules are lower.

|---|---|
| What is the state minimum wage for security guards here, and am I being paid it? | Your state labour department's website or the local labour office |
| Is this agency licensed under PSARA? | Ask to see the licence; the state's controlling authority (usually the Home Department) lists licensed agencies |

Is it legal where you live?
All India
A security agency must hold a licence under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 for the state it works in, and must train and verify its guards. Minimum wages, provident fund and ESI apply to guards as employees of the agency.
As of Oct 2026
How to start
- Ask guards at large societies and offices near you which agency employs them and whether pay comes on time.
- Apply at the agency's office with documents. Do not pay an agent.
- Complete police verification and the training.
- Get an appointment letter, and note your UAN and ESI number.
- Keep every payslip. After a year or two, ask about head guard or supervisor posts.
What is good about it
- A monthly wage with provident fund and ESI when the agency follows the law.
- Needs little schooling and no money.
- Work is available in every town and city.
- Ex-servicemen and former police are preferred and need shorter training.
What is hard about it
- Long shifts, nights and no weekly off at many sites.
- Smaller agencies often pay below the minimum wage or skip overtime.
- Standing for hours, in all weather, with real risk at some sites.
- Little growth unless you move into supervision or armed duty.
- You can be moved between sites at short notice.
Traps to avoid
- Agents or 'placement offices' charging a registration or uniform fee for a guard job.
- Agencies that hold your original certificates. Give copies only.
- Unlicensed agencies that pay in cash with no PF or ESI.
