Paid Apprenticeship (NAPS and NATS)
अप्रेंटिसशिप (शिक्षुता) · शिकाऊ उमेदवारी
On-the-job training in a company or government unit for six months to a few years, with a monthly stipend fixed by law and a certificate at the end. The one option here that pays you while giving you a skill.
The short answer
The best answer to 'no skill and no money' for anyone who can live on a modest stipend for a year. The minimum stipend is set by the central government, there is nothing to pay, and you finish with a trade certificate and work experience. It is not a job: the employer has no duty to keep you afterwards.

Under the Apprentices Act, 1961, factories, workshops, offices, railway units, banks and other establishments take on apprentices and train them at work. You sign an apprenticeship contract that is registered on a government portal, work alongside regular staff, and are paid a stipend every month. Trade apprentices can be as little as Class 5 to Class 10 pass, depending on the trade; there are separate streams for ITI holders, diploma holders and graduates. At the end you take an assessment and receive a certificate recognised across India. Many government recruiters, including the Railways and public sector companies, give weight or reserve posts for those who have completed an apprenticeship with them.
What you need
- Age 14 or above.
- Your highest school or college certificate. The minimum depends on the trade: some accept Class 5 to 9, most ask for Class 10, ITI, a diploma or a degree.
- Aadhaar and a bank account linked to it, because the stipend is paid by bank transfer.
- A phone or cyber cafe access to register on the portal.
- Age 14 or above (18 or above for trades classed as hazardous).
- Somewhere to stay near the establishment. Hostels are rarely provided.
How the money works
The establishment pays a fixed stipend every month into your bank account. The central government sets the minimum by qualification and may share part of the cost with the employer, but you are paid by the establishment. Employers may pay more than the minimum, and many large ones do.
- The stipend is not a salary: there is usually no provident fund, and no claim to a permanent job.
- Working hours and leave follow the rules for workers in that establishment.
- If you leave before the contract ends without cause, the contract may provide for recovery of training cost. Read it.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
Minimum stipend from 11 September 2025: ₹6,800 a month for those who passed Class 5 to 9; ₹8,200 for Class 10 pass; ₹9,600 for Class 12 pass and for holders of a national or state trade certificate; ₹10,900 for technician (diploma) apprentices; ₹12,300 for graduate apprentices.

The previous minimums were ₹5,000 to ₹9,000. The revised rates were notified in the Gazette on 11 September 2025, and future revisions are proposed to follow the consumer price index every two years.

What we could not find
- How many apprentices are kept on as employees after training. No official figure was found.
- What individual companies pay above the minimum.
Is it legal where you live?
All India
Apprenticeship is governed by the Apprentices Act, 1961 and the Apprenticeship Rules. The contract must be registered on the government portal, the stipend may not be below the notified minimum, and an apprentice is a trainee, not a worker, under the Act. An unregistered 'apprenticeship' has none of these protections.

How to start
- Register free on apprenticeshipindia.gov.in for trade apprenticeships (school pass-outs and ITI holders), or on nats.education.gov.in if you hold a diploma or degree.
- Complete your profile with Aadhaar, bank account and certificates.
- Search openings by district and trade, and apply to several. Also watch for apprentice notices from the Railways, public sector companies and banks.
- Attend the employer's selection, which is usually on marks, sometimes with a simple test or interview.
- Sign the contract only on the portal, and check that the stipend is at or above the minimum for your qualification.
- Finish the training and take the final assessment for the certificate. Ask the employer early how they hire from their apprentices.
What is good about it
- Nothing to pay, and a stipend from the first month.
- A real skill, work experience and a nationally recognised certificate.
- Open to school pass-outs, not only to ITI holders and graduates.
- Counts in your favour in several government and public sector recruitments.
- Fixed hours and a workplace, unlike gig work.
What is hard about it
- The stipend is lower than what a full-time delivery rider may gross, and hard to live on away from home.
- No guarantee of a job at the end.
- Some employers use apprentices as cheap labour and teach little. Ask past apprentices before joining.
- Good openings are concentrated in industrial districts, so you may have to move.
Traps to avoid
- Agents charging for an 'apprenticeship seat', especially in the Railways or public sector companies. Selection is on merit through official notices, and registration on the portal is free.
- Offers that are not registered on the government portal. Without a registered contract there is no protected stipend and no certificate.
- Websites that copy the name of the official portal and ask for a fee. The official addresses end in .gov.in.

Questions people ask
What is the minimum stipend for an apprentice in 2026?+
From 11 September 2025 the minimum is ₹6,800 a month for Class 5 to 9 pass, ₹8,200 for Class 10 pass, ₹9,600 for Class 12 pass and trade certificate holders, ₹10,900 for diploma holders and ₹12,300 for graduates. Employers can pay more.
Is an apprenticeship a job?+
No. It is training under a registered contract. You are paid a stipend, not a salary, and the employer is not required to employ you afterwards, though many hire from their own apprentices.
Can I do an apprenticeship without ITI?+
Yes. Some trades accept candidates who have passed Class 5 to Class 10 with no ITI. The training period is longer for freshers than for ITI holders.
Do I have to pay anything to become an apprentice?+
No. Registration on the official portals is free and there is no fee for selection. Anyone asking for money for a seat is running a fraud.
