Mutual Fund Distributor
म्यूचुअल फंड डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर · म्युच्युअल फंड वितरक
Helping people start and continue mutual fund investments and earning a small yearly commission on the money they keep invested. Costs a few thousand rupees to enter and takes years to pay.
The short answer
A slow, respectable income for someone patient with a circle of salaried or business families who trust them. The exam and registration cost little. Commission is a small yearly percentage of clients' invested money, so the first two or three years pay almost nothing. It suits an insurance agent, an accountant or a retired bank employee far better than someone who needs income now.

A distributor is registered with the Association of Mutual Funds in India and holds an ARN, a registration number, after passing an examination. You help clients complete their KYC, choose schemes that suit their goals, start monthly investments (SIPs) and stay invested through market falls. Fund companies pay you a trail commission for as long as the client's money stays in the scheme. You are a seller of products, not a registered investment adviser, and you must not promise returns.
What you need
- Age 18 or above.
- A pass in the NISM Series V-A Mutual Fund Distributors examination.
- ARN registration with AMFI, done online with PAN and Aadhaar.
- Empanelment with fund companies, directly or through a distribution platform.
- A circle of people with steady incomes who will invest regularly.
- Willingness to keep learning and to tell clients to stay invested when markets fall.

How the money works
Fund companies pay a trail commission: a small percentage a year on the value of your clients' investments, paid monthly for as long as the money stays invested. The percentage differs by type of scheme and by fund company.
- Income grows with the total money your clients hold, not with the number of forms you fill.
- If clients withdraw, or move to 'direct' plans that pay no commission, your income falls.
- The certificate and ARN must be renewed periodically, through continuing education.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
The NISM Series V-A examination fee is ₹1,500 plus GST, for 100 one-mark questions in 120 minutes with a pass mark of 50 and no negative marking.

This shows a year's commission at that level of invested money. Take the yearly trail percentage from the fund companies' published disclosures. It takes years to build up the invested amount.
Commission does not arrive evenly. Expect months with nothing, and count the months before your first sale as unpaid.
Is it legal where you live?
All India
Only a person holding a valid NISM certificate and an AMFI registration number may sell mutual funds, under SEBI's rules. A distributor may not promise returns, pass back commission to a client or give advice for a fee without being a SEBI-registered investment adviser.

How to start
- Study for and pass the NISM Series V-A examination.
- Apply for an ARN on the AMFI website.
- Empanel with a few fund companies or join a distribution platform.
- Start with ten families you know: complete their KYC and begin small monthly investments suited to their goals.
- Review each client once a year and keep them invested.
What is good about it
- Low cost to enter, and a recognised certificate.
- Income continues every year on the same clients, and grows as they invest more.
- Can be done part-time from home.
- Useful knowledge for your own family's savings.
What is hard about it
- Very slow: the first years pay little.
- Income falls when markets fall or clients withdraw.
- Clients can switch to commission-free direct plans.
- You carry the blame for market losses.
- Rules and commission structures keep changing.
Traps to avoid
- Courses promising a large monthly income from distribution within months.
- Schemes 'guaranteeing' returns. No mutual fund guarantees returns, and selling one that way is an offence.
- Collecting clients' money in your own account. Investments go only from the client's bank to the fund.
