A home chocolate maker melts ready compound chocolate, adds nuts, fillings and flavours, sets it in moulds, wraps the pieces and packs them in boxes and hampers. Because the chocolate is bought ready-made, the kitchen needs only moulds, a melting pot, a fridge and packing material. It suits someone neat and creative who can take and deliver orders on time. Boxes sell mainly as gifts for Diwali, Rakhi, Valentine's Day, weddings and return gifts, with small regular sales in between. Margins per kilo are good, but volumes are small and bunched around festivals. The hard parts are heat (chocolate melts in transit for half the year), short peak seasons, attractive packaging that costs money, and many other home sellers.

Skills needed: Melting and moulding without bloom or streaks, simple fillings, neat wrapping and gift packing. Short workshops and online tutorials cover the basics.

    How it works

    1. Chop and melt compound chocolate gently; do not let water touch it.
    2. Fill moulds, add nuts or fillings, tap out air and chill until set.
    3. Unmould with clean, dry hands or gloves; wrap in foil.
    4. Arrange in trays and boxes; label with dates and ingredients.
    5. Store cool and deliver in insulated packing in warm months.

    Money to start

This is a small, skill-based business. Most people start it with about ₹43,830 of their own savings, so the numbers on this page assume no loan and there is no bank project report for it.

If you do need to borrow, a Mudra Shishu loan covers up to ₹50,000. How Mudra works

Who buys and how to sell

    Buyers

    • Families and friends buying festival gifts
    • Companies and offices (Diwali and New Year gifting)
    • Wedding and baby-shower hosts (return gifts)
    • Gift shops, bakeries and cafes
    • Birthday party organisers

    Ways to sell

    • WhatsApp and Instagram orders
    • Festival exhibitions and school fairs
    • Corporate gifting enquiries through personal contacts
    • Consignment in gift shops and bakeries
    • Customised boxes for weddings

Season: Most sales fall around Rakhi, Diwali, Christmas, New Year and Valentine's Day. Summer is slow because chocolate melts.

Competition: Branded chocolate boxes, bakeries and many home makers. Custom shapes, names and packaging are what a home seller offers that brands do not.

Risks and how to handle them

Chocolate melts or blooms in transit

Deliver locally in the cool part of the day, use insulated packing and avoid couriering far in summer.

Sales depend on a few festival weeks

Take corporate and wedding orders early, and add year-round items such as birthday boxes.

    Packaging cost eats the margin

Standardise two or three box sizes and buy packaging in bulk before the season.

    Allergy or food-safety complaint

Declare nuts and milk on the label, work with clean dry tools and note batch dates.

    Tips from the trade

    • Corporate Diwali orders are placed weeks ahead; show samples in September.
    • Cost each box by weight, including packaging, before quoting.
    • Compound is easy to work with; learn tempering before moving to real couverture chocolate.

    Questions people ask

    What is compound chocolate?+

It is a ready chocolate-flavoured base made with vegetable fat instead of only cocoa butter. It melts and sets easily without tempering, which is why most home makers start with it. Label rules treat it differently from real chocolate.

How much does it cost to start?+

Published guides put moulds at ₹1,500–4,000, a melting pot at ₹800–2,000 and a first batch of ingredients and packaging at ₹3,000–8,000. A separate small fridge is the biggest extra if you do not have space in your own.

How much investment is needed to start a homemade chocolates business?+

About ₹43,830 for a small unit: ₹29,000 for machinery and equipment, ₹7,000 for set-up costs and ₹7,830 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a homemade chocolates business make per month?+

Working at 35% of what one person can handle, sales are about ₹28,000 a month and about ₹11,079 is left after materials and running costs. That is the pay for your own time. These are estimates; your prices and the number of customers decide the real figure.

What licences are required for homemade chocolates?+

Mandatory: FSSAI registration, Label declarations. Depending on your set-up you may also need: GST registration, Udyam registration.
