A gift shop buys showpieces, photo frames, soft toys, toys, perfumes, watches, mugs, greeting cards and wrapping material from wholesalers and sells them for birthdays, weddings, festivals and special days. Many also print personalised mugs, cushions and frames. It needs an attractive shop in a market or near colleges and offices, display shelving and opening stock. It suits someone with taste for what people will like and a habit of refreshing stock often. Margins on gift items are better than in most retail, but sales are uneven and fashion-driven, so unsold stock is the main cost. The hard parts are heavy dependence on festivals and occasions, stock that goes out of fashion, online gifting sites, and rent for a location with enough footfall.

Skills needed: Buying sense for trends, display and gift-wrapping skill, and friendly selling. Personalised printing is learnt quickly from the equipment supplier.

    Loan route

    Mudra loan (Kishore)

    Own money ₹44,026 · Loan ₹3.96 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹9,239

    No collateral, no subsidy.

    How Mudra works

    PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹66,039 (general, urban) to ₹1.54 lakh (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹7,699–₹6,159.

Own money 5–10%. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

    How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

    Buyers

    • College students and young couples
    • Families buying for birthdays and weddings
    • Offices and companies (festival and corporate gifts)
    • Schools and clubs (prizes and return gifts)
    • Tourists, in visitor towns

    Ways to sell

    • Walk-in sales in a market or near colleges
    • Bulk orders for return gifts and corporate gifting
    • Instagram and WhatsApp catalogue with delivery
    • Personalised gift orders

Season: Peaks at Valentine's Day, Rakhi, Friendship Day, Diwali, Christmas and New Year, and in the wedding season; slow in the monsoon and exam months.

Competition: Online gifting sites, other gift shops, and supermarkets. A local shop wins on same-day gifts, wrapping, personalisation and items people can see and touch.

Risks and how to handle them

Stock goes out of fashion and has to be sold at a loss

Buy small lots, track what sells and clear slow items quickly.

Sales depend on a few festival weeks

Add steady lines such as toys, stationery, birthday supplies and bulk return-gift orders.

High rent for a location with footfall

Choose a smaller shop in the right place over a large one in a quiet lane.

    Breakage and pilferage

Display fragile and costly items behind glass and check stock weekly.

    Tips from the trade

    • Items between ₹100 and ₹500 make up most sales; keep plenty of choice there.
    • Personalised mugs, frames and cushions earn well and cannot be price-compared easily.
    • Bulk return-gift and corporate orders are worth chasing before every season.

    Questions people ask

What margin does a gift shop earn?+

Published figures vary widely, from about 20% to 50% of the selling price depending on the items, and unsold stock reduces the real figure. Work out your own from wholesale prices in your buying market.

    Should I take a gift shop franchise?+

A franchise brings a brand and a ready range, with listed investments from about ₹2–5 lakh for small kiosks to ₹10 lakh and above for stores. An independent shop is cheaper and lets you buy what sells locally.

How much investment is needed to start a gift and novelty shop business?+

About ₹4.4 lakh for a small unit: ₹2.1 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹55,000 for set-up costs and ₹1.75 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a gift and novelty shop business make per month?+

At 55% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.49 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹20,625 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹9,239, the owner keeps about ₹11,386 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for gift and novelty shop?+

With a project cost of about ₹4.4 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹3.96 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.54 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

What licences are required for gift and novelty shop?+

Mandatory: Shop and Establishment registration, BIS-marked toys only. Depending on your set-up you may also need: GST registration, Local body trade licence, Udyam registration.
