A home bakery takes orders for birthday and celebration cakes, cupcakes, brownies and cookies, bakes them in a home kitchen with a good oven and mixer, and hands them over by pick-up or local delivery. Almost all selling happens through photos on WhatsApp and Instagram and by word of mouth. It suits someone who enjoys baking, can decorate neatly and can manage orders and deadlines alone. Customers pay well for a cake made to their theme, so the earning per kilo is good, but the number of orders one person can handle is small. The profit shown is the owner's pay for all the baking. The hard parts are weekend and late-night work, last-minute orders, delivery damage and many other home bakers.

Skills needed: Baking and decoration skill from a course or practice, food hygiene, photography for social media and careful order-taking.

Risks and how to handle them

A cake is damaged in delivery or melts in summer

Use sturdy boxes, deliver chilled, prefer pick-up for tall cakes and explain handling to the customer.

    Last-minute cancellations

Take at least half the amount in advance and state a cancellation rule.

Burnout from late nights and weekend rush

Fix a maximum number of orders a day and a cut-off time for orders.

    A food-safety complaint

Use fresh cream and eggs, keep cold items refrigerated and never reuse old cream or sponge.

    Tips from the trade

    • Cost every recipe by weight, including the box and your time, before setting prices.
    • Dry bakes such as brownies, cookies and tea cakes can be couriered and sold in advance.
    • Good daylight photos bring more orders than paid promotion.

    Questions people ask

Do I need an FSSAI licence to sell cakes from home?+

Yes. Any food business, including a home kitchen, needs at least FSSAI basic registration, which costs ₹100 a year and is applied for online.

Can I start with my existing home oven?+

Yes, a good OTG is enough for the first orders. Upgrade to a larger convection oven when you regularly need to bake several cakes a day.

How much investment is needed to start a home bakery business?+

About ₹1.91 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.62 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹14,500 for set-up costs and ₹14,780 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a home bakery business make per month?+
