What you will actually do
- Guarding wards, gates and watch towers
- Locking, unlocking and counting inmates at fixed times
- Searching inmates, cells and visitors for prohibited articles
- Escorting inmates to hospital, court production and interviews
- Reporting incidents and maintaining ward registers
A typical day
Duty runs in shifts inside the jail complex. You count the inmates of your ward at unlocking, supervise meals, work and visiting hours, search for mobile phones and other contraband, and lock up again in the evening. Tihar and Mandoli hold far more inmates than they were built for, so tension is constant and staff are few. Night duty means watch towers and rounds.

Eligibility: 10+2 (Senior Secondary) pass from a recognised board. Open to male candidates only. Age 18–27. SC/ST: 5 years, OBC: 3 years, PwBD: 10 years; departmental candidates and other categories as per the table in the advertisement.
Physical standards: Height 170 cm (relaxable by 5 cm for hill and ST candidates), chest 81–85 cm unexpanded with a mandatory 5 cm expansion. Physical endurance test includes a 1,600 m race in 6 minutes, followed by further events for those who qualify.
