What you will actually do

  • Registering FIRs and investigating criminal cases
  • Arresting accused persons, preparing charge sheets and attending court
  • Leading patrols and managing a beat or police post
  • Law-and-order duty at protests, festivals and VIP movements
  • Handling emergency calls and complaints from the public
  • Supervising constables and head constables

A typical day

There is no fixed shift in practice. As an investigating officer in a police station you carry dozens of open cases: visiting scenes, recording statements, collecting CCTV and call records, producing accused in court and updating case files. In between come emergency calls, bandobast for a rally, and night duty at the station. Twelve to fourteen hour days are common and weekly offs are often cancelled.
