What you will actually do

  • Booking speed post, registered letters and parcels at the counter
  • Opening and operating savings accounts, recurring deposits and certificates
  • Handling cash, stamps and daily accounts
  • Processing postal life insurance premiums and claims
  • Working as treasurer or sub-postmaster in small offices

A typical day

You sit at a counter from opening time, serving a queue of customers depositing money, sending parcels or asking about accounts, all on the department's software, which can be slow. After the counter closes you tally cash and vouchers; any shortage has to be made good by you. In a small sub-post office you may be the only clerk, also acting as postmaster.
