What you will actually do

  • Bedside care, medication and monitoring of admitted patients
  • Assisting doctors in procedures, operations and emergencies
  • Managing a ward's supplies, records and junior staff
  • Running outpatient, immunisation and health unit services
  • Attending railway accident relief medical duty when called

A typical day

You work shifts in a railway hospital ward, operation theatre or outpatient department. Patients are railway employees, pensioners and their families, so the same faces return and expectations are high. The load is lighter than in a big government hospital, but staff are few, so one nurse may cover a whole ward at night. At small health units you may be the senior-most medical person present when the doctor is away.
