What you will actually do

  • Giving medicines, injections and IV fluids as prescribed
  • Monitoring vital signs and recording nursing notes
  • Assisting doctors in procedures and operations
  • Caring for critically ill patients in ICUs
  • Admission, discharge and patient education
  • Maintaining ward stock, equipment and infection control

A typical day

You take handover at the start of the shift and are responsible for a set of patients, often more than is comfortable. The hours go in medication rounds, monitoring, dressing, shifting patients for tests, updating records and answering relatives' questions. In an ICU every patient needs constant attention. Night shifts come in blocks. You are on your feet nearly the whole time, and breaks depend on how the ward is that day.
