What you will actually do
- Maintaining and compiling the accounts of a public works, irrigation or public health division
- Checking contractors' bills, measurements and tenders before payment
- Advising the Executive Engineer on financial rules
- Sending the monthly account to the Accountant General
- Replying to audit observations on the division
A typical day
You are usually the only C&AG-cadre person in a state engineering division, sitting next to the Executive Engineer. The day goes in checking running bills of contractors against measurement books, pointing out rule violations before cheques are signed, and getting the monthly account out by the due date. You depend on state staff for information and sometimes have to say no to your own boss, which takes tact.
