What you will actually do

  • Doing your trade for the unit: cooking, hair cutting, laundry, tailoring, repairs or cleaning
  • Running the mess, canteen or workshop under the unit's supervisors
  • Guard and camp security duties by roster
  • Moving with the battalion on deployments and setting up camp facilities
  • Weapon training and drills like other personnel

A typical day

You are a soldier first and a tradesman second. A cook starts before dawn preparing breakfast for a company of a hundred and finishes after dinner; a barber, washerman or tailor serves the whole unit through the day. You still attend roll call, take your turn on sentry duty and move with the battalion to wherever it is deployed, often to forest camps with few facilities. You live in barracks and go home on leave.

Eligibility: Class 10 pass, and you must be proficient and have worked in the trade applied for (cook, water carrier, barber, washerman, safai karamchari, cobbler, tailor, carpenter, gardener, painter, bugler, band and others). Mechanic Motor Vehicle needs a two-year ITI certificate with one year of experience. Age 18–23. SC/ST: 5 years, OBC: 3 years, ex-servicemen: 3 years after deducting military service, as per the notification.

Physical standards: Men: height 170 cm; women: 157 cm, with relaxations for ST and hill candidates. Run: 5 km in 24 minutes for men and 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes for women in technical trades; for cook, water carrier, barber, washerman and safai karamchari, 1.6 km in 10 minutes (men) and 12 minutes (women).
