What you will actually do
- Helping operate tamping, ballast-cleaning and other track machines
- Setting up and clearing the machine at the work site
- Routine cleaning, greasing and minor repairs of the machine
- Flagging and safety duties during traffic blocks
- Carrying tools and consumables
A typical day
Track machines work during traffic blocks, the few hours when trains are stopped on a section, often at night. You travel with the machine and its crew from site to site, living in a camp coach parked at a station for days or weeks. During the block you help the operator and watch the working parts; outside it you clean and service the machine. It is less back-breaking than gang work but means long spells away from home.
