What you will actually do

- Helping trace and repair cable faults
- Attending signal failures with the maintainer
A typical day
You work as the helper to a signal technician covering a few stations. Together you walk or ride to points and signals, clean contacts, check batteries and tighten fittings, always watching for trains. When a signal fails, at whatever hour, you go with the maintainer to the spot. The work is lighter than track maintenance but involves the same exposure to weather and running lines.
