What you will actually do

  • Conducting prosecution in the courts of Metropolitan Magistrates on behalf of the state
  • Examining witnesses and arguing bail, charge and final hearings
  • Scrutinising police charge sheets and advising investigating officers
  • Preparing briefs, written submissions and appeals proposals
  • Reporting case outcomes to the Directorate

A typical day

You are assigned to one or two magistrate courts with dozens of matters on the board each day. Mornings are spent on your feet: bail replies, evidence, arguments, with police files arriving minutes before the hearing. Afternoons go to reading charge sheets for the next day and noting defects for the investigating officer. The volume is high and preparation time is short, so you learn to prioritise the serious cases.
