The short answer

Worth applying to if you are in the age band and your family income is within the limit: a year inside a large company, a stipend and nothing to pay. It is not a job offer, the stipend will not cover living away from home in a big city, and the terms have been changing, so read the official portal before relying on any figure.

The scheme is run by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Large companies list internship positions on a government portal; you make a profile, apply to a few, and if selected spend twelve months working in the company's office, plant or outlets. You are paid a monthly stipend, most of it by the government, plus a one-time grant when you join, and you are covered by government insurance schemes. It began as a pilot in late 2024 and is meant to place a very large number of interns over five years.

What you need

  • Age 21 or above.
  • Age 21 to 24 on the date of application, as first notified.
  • Class 10, Class 12, ITI, diploma or a degree such as BA, BSc, BCom, BBA or BCA. Graduates of the premier institutes and holders of professional or postgraduate qualifications are excluded.
  • Not in full-time employment or full-time education.
  • No family member earning more than ₹8 lakh a year, and none in a regular government job.
  • Aadhaar and a bank account linked to it.

How the money works

A monthly stipend is paid for the twelve months: the larger part by the government directly into your account, and the rest by the company. A one-time grant is paid on joining.

  • Accommodation and travel are your own to arrange unless the company offers them.
  • There is no promise of a job at the end.
  • Leaving midway ends the stipend.

What people actually take home

We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.

  • The stipend is ₹5,000 a month: ₹4,500 from the government and ₹500 from the company. A one-time grant of ₹6,000 is paid on joining, with cover under two government insurance schemes. The internship lasts 12 months.

  • The pilot in late 2024 offered about 1.25 lakh positions, and the scheme aims at one crore internships in five years in the top 500 companies.

What we could not find

  • Whether the terms were revised in 2026. One website says the stipend is now ₹9,000 with a wider age band and income limit; others still show ₹5,000 and ages 21 to 24. We could not confirm either from the official portal.
  • How many interns were later hired by their companies.

Is it legal where you live?

  • All India

An intern under the scheme is a trainee, not an employee, and the scheme is separate from apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act. Eligibility and stipend are set by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs' guidelines, which have been revised between rounds.

    As of Oct 2026

How to start

  1. Open the official portal and read the current guidelines.
  2. Register with Aadhaar and complete your profile and e-KYC.
  3. Apply to the permitted number of internships, preferring ones in or near your district.
  4. Accept an offer within the time limit and join with your documents.
  5. Ask in the first month how the company hires from its interns.

What is good about it

  • A year in a large company on your record.
  • A stipend and a joining grant, with nothing to pay.
  • Open to 10th and 12th pass and ITI holders, not only graduates.
  • Insurance cover during the internship.

What is hard about it

  • The stipend is small for living away from home.
  • No guarantee of employment afterwards.
  • A narrow age band, and the rules change between rounds.
  • Many positions are in cities and plants far from applicants' homes.

Traps to avoid

  • Websites and agents charging a fee to register or 'confirm' an internship. Registration on the official portal is free.
  • Fake offer emails. Offers come only through the portal.
