यूट्यूब और इंस्टाग्राम कंटेंट क्रिएटर · यूट्यूब आणि इंस्टाग्राम कंटेंट क्रिएटर
Making videos on a phone and earning from advertising, brand deals or your own sales once enough people watch. Free to start; very few channels reach a living income.
The short answer
Start it as a hobby beside other work, never in place of it. YouTube pays nothing until a channel crosses fixed thresholds of subscribers and watch time, most channels never do, and those that do usually earn little at first. It is worth doing if you have something useful to show, such as cooking, a craft, teaching, farming or repair, because the same videos can also bring customers for real work.

A creator publishes videos regularly on one subject and builds an audience. Money comes in several ways: a share of advertising once the platform admits the channel to its partner programme, payments from brands to feature a product, commission on products recommended through affiliate links, and selling your own goods or services to viewers. Advertising income is tied to views and to what advertisers pay for that audience, which is lower for Indian-language viewers than for many foreign ones. The work is planning, shooting, editing and publishing week after week, usually for a year or more before any payment.
What you need
- Age 18 or above.
- A smartphone with a decent camera, and mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- A subject you know better than most and can talk about for a hundred videos.
- Time every week to shoot and edit, for a long period without pay.
- A bank account, PAN and a linked AdSense account once you qualify.
- For a child's channel, an adult must own and run the account.

How the money works
YouTube shares advertising and Premium revenue with channels admitted to its Partner Programme, paid monthly through AdSense above a minimum balance. Brands pay per video by agreement. Affiliate programmes pay a percentage when a viewer buys through your link.
- Meeting the thresholds does not guarantee admission: the channel is reviewed against the platform's policies.
- Copied clips, film songs and reused videos are refused or demonetised.
- A channel can lose its income overnight through a policy strike or a change in the platform's rules.
- Income from all these sources is taxable.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
YouTube's expanded Partner Programme opens some features at 500 subscribers with 3 public uploads in 90 days and either 3,000 public watch hours in a year or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. A share of advertising revenue needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in a year or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.

Every channel that meets the threshold goes through a review, and needs two-step verification and a linked AdSense account.

How to start
- Pick one narrow subject you can sustain: a cuisine, a craft, a school subject, a trade.
- Publish one useful video a week for six months before judging the result.
- Read the platform's monetisation policies once, fully.
- Use the channel to bring customers to real work: orders, classes, services.
- Apply for the partner programme only when your own Studio shows you qualify.
What is good about it
- Free to start, from home, at any hour.
- Can bring customers for a real skill or business, which pays sooner than advertising.
- Income, once it comes, continues on old videos.
- Builds a public record of what you know.
What is hard about it
- Most channels never earn anything.
- A year or more of unpaid work is normal.
- Income depends on rules you do not control.
- Constant comparison, criticism and pressure to post.
- Easy to spend on equipment that does not help.
Traps to avoid
- 'Buy subscribers and watch hours' services. They get channels rejected or removed.
- Courses promising a monthly income from YouTube or Reels.
- Fake brand-deal emails that send a file or link to steal your account.
- Paid 'like and subscribe' task jobs. Read our page on online job frauds.

How many subscribers do I need to earn from YouTube?+
For a share of advertising revenue: 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, followed by a review. Some features open at 500 subscribers in eligible countries; check YouTube Studio for your channel.
How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views in India?+
We found no reliable figure. It varies with the subject, the language, the season and how many viewers see advertisements. Ask small creators in your own subject, and do not plan on advertising income.
