White phenyl is a milky disinfectant floor cleaner. Small units do not make the active chemicals; they buy a ready phenyl concentrate, dilute it with water in a tank, add perfume or colour if needed, and fill bottles and cans. The equipment is a tank with a stirrer, a filling tap or machine and a cap sealer, so it can start in a room. Homes, shops, housing societies, schools, hospitals and offices all buy floor cleaner regularly. The liquid itself costs very little; the bottle is the main cost, and the real work is selling and delivering a heavy, low-priced product. The hard parts are transport cost, many local competitors, and buyers who compare only on price.

Skills needed: Basic mixing training (MSME institutes and concentrate suppliers give it), safe chemical handling, and local selling.

PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹46,256 (general, urban) to ₹1.08 lakh (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹5,393–₹4,314.

Own money 5–10%. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Kirana and general stores
  • Housing societies and housekeeping contractors
  • Schools, hospitals, hotels and offices
  • Municipal and government buyers (through tenders)

Ways to sell

  • Shop-to-shop sales
  • Monthly supply to societies and institutions in 5 litre cans
  • Housekeeping-material dealers
  • Tenders and the GeM portal

Season: Steady, with higher use in the monsoon.

Competition: National brands of floor cleaner and many local phenyl makers. Reliable strength, a pleasant smell and regular delivery keep institutional buyers.

Risks and how to handle them

Transport cost makes distant sales unprofitable

Sell within a short radius and prefer bulk cans over small bottles for far buyers.

Phenyl separates or loses its milky look

Use soft water, follow the supplier's dilution ratio and test each concentrate lot.

Label claims that need a licence you do not have

Confirm the licence position before printing and keep claims modest.

Skin and eye irritation from concentrate

Use gloves and goggles, ventilate the room and keep the product away from children.

Tips from the trade

  • Institutions buying 5 litre cans every month are steadier than shops.
  • Dishwash liquid, toilet cleaner and hand wash can be added with the same tank and filler.
  • Collect and refill customers' cans to save on packing.

Questions people ask

Do I need to know chemistry?+

Not for dilution from a ready concentrate; you follow the supplier's ratio and mixing order. Making your own concentrate from pine oil and emulsifiers needs proper formulation training.

Why is the bottle the biggest cost?+

A litre of diluted phenyl contains only a few rupees of concentrate. A bottle, cap and label cost more than the liquid, which is why refills and bulk cans improve the margin.

How much investment is needed to start a phenyl and floor cleaner making business?+

About ₹3.08 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.34 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹28,000 for set-up costs and ₹1.46 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a phenyl and floor cleaner making business make per month?+

At 50% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.56 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹16,650 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹6,471, the owner keeps about ₹10,179 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for phenyl and floor cleaner making?+

Mixing tank with stirrer, 200–500 litre (about ₹40,000); Semi-automatic liquid filling machine (about ₹35,000).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for phenyl and floor cleaner making?+

With a project cost of about ₹3.08 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹2.78 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.08 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
