Oyster mushrooms grow on chopped, treated paddy or wheat straw packed with spawn in plastic bags, hung in a dark, humid room. The first flush comes about a month after spawning and a cycle takes around two months. It needs no land, little water and almost no equipment, so a spare room, shed or thatched hut is enough. It suits someone careful about cleanliness who can sell a perishable product locally every few days. A small room yields modest quantities, so this is a side income unless you add rooms. The hard parts are contamination by green mould, heat (oyster mushrooms do poorly in peak summer without cooling), a shelf life of two or three days, and finding regular buyers where mushrooms are unfamiliar.

Skills needed: Straw treatment, clean spawning and humidity control. Krishi Vigyan Kendras and agricultural universities run short mushroom training courses and often sell spawn.

    if applicable

Fresh produce sold loose by the grower is treated differently from packed food. Check your case on foscos.fssai.gov.in.

State horticulture departments have supported mushroom units under horticulture schemes. Ask the district horticulture office what is open now; do not plan around a subsidy until it is sanctioned.

    How it works

    1. Chop straw; soak and treat it with hot water or approved chemicals; drain to the right moisture.
    2. Fill bags in layers of straw and spawn; tie and make small holes.
    3. Keep bags in the dark for about two to three weeks until white growth covers the straw.
    4. Open or slit the bags; mist to keep humidity high and allow fresh air and dim light.
    5. Pick mushrooms before the edges curl up; pack and sell the same day.
    6. After two or three flushes, remove spent bags and clean the room before the next batch.

    Money to start

This is a small, skill-based business. Most people start it with about ₹63,784 of their own savings, so the numbers on this page assume no loan and there is no bank project report for it.

Who buys and how to sell

    Buyers

    • Households nearby
    • Vegetable shops and supermarkets
    • Hotels, restaurants and caterers
    • Health-food buyers and gyms
    • Buyers of dried mushrooms and powder

    Ways to sell

    • Direct delivery to regular households
    • Supply to vegetable vendors and shops on fixed days
    • Standing orders from restaurants
    • Weekly markets and farmers' markets
    • Drying unsold produce for later sale

Season: Oyster mushrooms grow best in cooler, humid months. Peak summer needs cooling or a break. Demand is steady where people know the product and rises in winter.

Competition: Button mushrooms from large farms and other small growers. Freshness and regular supply to nearby buyers are a small grower's strengths.

Risks and how to handle them

Green mould or other contamination ruins a batch

Treat straw properly, use fresh spawn from a reliable lab, keep hands and the room clean, and remove infected bags at once.

    Mushrooms spoil before they sell

Line up buyers before the first flush, harvest to orders and dry what is left.

    Summer heat stops production

Grow heat-tolerant strains, use wet curtains and foggers, or plan a summer break.

Local buyers are unfamiliar with oyster mushrooms

Give samples with a simple recipe and start with restaurants and health-conscious buyers.

    Tips from the trade

    • Start with 50 bags to learn before filling the room.
    • Staggering batches every week or two gives a steady harvest instead of one glut.
    • Spent straw makes good compost or cattle feed supplement; sell or use it.

    Questions people ask

How much can a small room produce?+

As a guide, a 300 sq ft room holding about 300 bags, at roughly a kilo a bag and six cycles a year, gives around 1,800 kg a year. Real yields depend on spawn, season and cleanliness.

Is this the same as button mushroom farming?+

No. Button mushrooms need composted substrate and cool, controlled rooms, which cost far more. Oyster mushrooms grow on plain straw at room temperature and are the usual starting point.

How much investment is needed to start a oyster mushroom cultivation business?+

About ₹63,784 for a small unit: ₹50,000 for machinery and equipment, ₹8,000 for set-up costs and ₹5,784 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a oyster mushroom cultivation business make per month?+

Working at 55% of what one person can handle, sales are about ₹9,900 a month and about ₹3,742 is left after materials and running costs. That is the pay for your own time. These are estimates; your prices and the number of customers decide the real figure.
