Sambrani cups are small pressed cups of charcoal, wood or cow-dung powder with resin and fragrance, lit for pooja to give scented smoke. A unit mixes the powders with binder and water, presses cups on a multi-cavity machine, dries them and packs them by the dozen. One machine fits in a room and needs one or two people. Daily pooja use gives steady demand, strongest in the southern states, and the product keeps for many months. Each cup earns about a rupee, so income depends on running the machine steadily and selling tens of thousands of cups a month. The hard parts are drying in the monsoon, cups that crack or fail to burn evenly, and getting distribution beyond your own town.

Skills needed: Mix proportion and moisture control (learnt from the machine supplier and by trial), and selling to pooja-goods wholesalers.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Pooja-goods wholesalers
  • Kirana and pooja shops
  • Temples and temple-area stalls
  • Agarbatti distributors adding a product

Ways to sell

  • Wholesalers in the nearest pooja market
  • Shop-to-shop sales
  • Festival and fair stalls
  • Online marketplaces

Season: Steady, with higher sales in festival months. Drying is slow in the monsoon.

Competition: Many small units, especially in the south, and agarbatti brands with their own dhoop lines. Even burning, good fragrance and neat boxes win repeat orders.

Risks and how to handle them

Cups crack, crumble or do not burn fully

Standardise the recipe by weight, control moisture and test-burn every batch.

Damp cups grow mould in the monsoon

Dry fully in a ventilated room or with a dryer before packing.

Machine-seller buy-back promises that do not hold

Find wholesalers yourself before buying the machine.

Thin margin per cup if the machine runs part-time

Secure two or three bulk buyers and add dhoop sticks or cones on the same mix.

Tips from the trade

  • Ask the supplier for the mix recipe and a full day's trial before paying for the machine.
  • Fragrance is what customers remember; test several.
  • Agarbatti wholesalers are the easiest first buyers because they already serve pooja shops.
