Camphor tablets are burnt in aarti in homes and temples every day. A small unit buys camphor powder or flakes, presses them into round or square tablets on a tablet machine with dies, and packs them quickly in airtight pouches, jars or boxes. One machine and one helper are enough to begin. Demand is steady and the product is small, light and easy to distribute with other pooja goods. The margin comes from the gap between the bulk powder price and the packed tablet price, which narrows whenever camphor prices jump. The hard parts are a costly and price-volatile raw material, loss of weight because camphor evaporates in storage, fire risk, and trusted brands on the shelf.

Skills needed: Machine setting for tablet weight and hardness, quick airtight packing, and fire-safe handling. Suppliers train on the machine in a day or two.

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Pooja-goods shops and kirana stores
  • Pooja-goods and agarbatti wholesalers
  • Temples
  • Supermarkets and pooja-kit packers

Ways to sell

  • Shop-to-shop supply with small pouches
  • Wholesalers in the pooja market
  • Distribution along with agarbatti or wicks
  • Bulk jars for temples

Season: Steady all year, with a rise in festival months.

Competition: Regional and national camphor brands and many small packers. Purity, full weight and airtight packing decide repeat orders.

Risks and how to handle them

Camphor prices rise after you have fixed rates with shops

Hold little stock, quote prices for short periods and revise with each purchase.

Stock loses weight by evaporation

Pack immediately in airtight packs, store cool and sell quickly.

Fire

No flames or smoking, good ventilation, proper wiring and extinguishers in the room.

Complaints about impure or underweight tablets

Buy from a known supplier, check weights regularly and never mix cheaper substances.

Tips from the trade

  • Small ₹10 and ₹20 pouches sell fastest; jars suit temples and regular users.
  • Selling camphor along with agarbatti, wicks and dhoop to the same shops cuts delivery cost.
  • Weigh a pack again after a month in storage to learn your real evaporation loss.

Questions people ask

Where does camphor powder come from?+

From camphor manufacturers and their dealers, sold in sealed bags as powder or flakes. Small units do not make camphor itself; they only press and pack it.

Can this be done at home?+

Only in a separate, well-ventilated room away from the kitchen. Camphor fumes are strong and the material burns easily, so it is safer in a small shed.

How much investment is needed to start a camphor tablet making business?+

About ₹2.93 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.3 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹29,000 for set-up costs and ₹1.34 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a camphor tablet making business make per month?+

At 45% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.8 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹16,665 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹6,142, the owner keeps about ₹10,523 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for camphor tablet making?+

Camphor tablet making machine with dies (₹45,000–₹2.45 lakh).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for camphor tablet making?+

With a project cost of about ₹2.93 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹2.63 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.02 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
