A typical day
Most officers start as a Block Development Officer or as a Deputy Magistrate at a collectorate. A BDO's day is a queue of villagers and panchayat members, review of housing, employment and welfare schemes, site visits and urgent reports to the district. Cyclones, floods and elections turn the block office into a control room. The role has wide reach and little backup, so the hours are long.
