What you will actually do

  • Translating letters, circulars, reports and forms between English and Hindi
  • Translating Parliament questions, annual reports and budget papers
  • Helping implement the Official Language policy in the office
  • Organising Hindi workshops and Hindi fortnight events
  • Preparing quarterly reports on the use of Hindi

A typical day

Documents arrive from different sections with a deadline, and you translate them at your desk, checking the official glossary for terms. Volume is uneven: quiet weeks, then a rush when Parliament is in session or an annual report is due. You also remind sections about official language rules, which is not always welcome. The work is solitary and suits people who like language.
