What you will actually do
- Political and economic reporting from Indian missions abroad
- Consular work: passports, visas and helping Indians in distress
- Negotiating and following up agreements with other governments
- Promoting trade, investment and cultural ties
- Handling a country or subject desk at the Ministry in Delhi
- Organising high-level visits and representing India at multilateral bodies
A typical day
In an embassy you start by reading local news and cables, then draft a report for Delhi, attend a meeting at the host foreign ministry, and handle a consular case, perhaps an Indian worker stuck without a passport. Evenings often have official receptions that are part of the job. In Delhi you are a desk officer at South Block or Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, preparing briefs and coordinating visits, often late into the night.
