What you will actually do

  • Patrolling the forest beat on foot, by day and night
  • Preventing illicit felling, poaching, grazing and encroachment
  • Detecting forest offences and assisting in seizures
  • Fire watching and fire-line maintenance
  • Helping manage human–wildlife conflict and rescue calls
  • Supervising plantation and nursery work

A typical day

Your beat is several square kilometres of forest that you walk with a watcher, checking boundaries, water holes and known entry points. Offences are reported to the Forester, and you may spend nights waiting on a tip about sandalwood or wildlife poachers. In the dry months fire duty takes over. When an elephant or leopard enters a village, you are among the first sent. Quarters are often inside or at the edge of the forest.
