What you will actually do
- Operating wireless sets in control rooms, police stations and PCR vans
- Receiving, logging and relaying messages accurately
- Handling emergency call dispatch and communication during bandobast
- Operating data and messaging terminals
- Basic upkeep of communication equipment
A typical day
You work a shift at a wireless set or dispatch console in a district control room or the central police control room. Messages come in constantly: emergency calls to pass to PCR vans, situation reports from pickets, instructions from officers. Each has to be logged and relayed word for word. During a major law-and-order situation the net is non-stop for hours. It is seated, indoor work, but it runs around the clock.
