An RO service business maintains household and small commercial water purifiers. The work is routine: changing sediment and carbon filters every few months, replacing the membrane when output drops, and fixing pumps, adapters, taps and leaks. It is done at the customer's home with a bag of tools and spares, so it can be run from home with a two-wheeler. Every purifier needs service two or three times a year, which makes this a repeat business built on a customer list and annual maintenance contracts. The profit shown assumes the owner is a working technician. The hard parts are building the first few hundred customers, cheap spares of doubtful quality in the market, and brand service networks and apps competing for the same calls.

Skills needed: Basic plumbing and electrical skill; RO fault-finding learnt in a few months with a service technician or a short course.

Own money ₹15,002 · Loan ₹1.35 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹3,148

No collateral, no subsidy.

How Mudra works

PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹22,504 (general, urban) to ₹52,508 (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹2,623–₹2,099.

Own money 5–10%. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Households with RO purifiers
  • Offices, clinics, schools and restaurants
  • Housing societies and hostels (bulk AMC)
  • Shops with water coolers and commercial RO units

Ways to sell

  • Service stickers on every machine
  • Reminder calls and WhatsApp messages
  • Google Business listing
  • Tie-ups with purifier sellers and plumbers
  • Annual maintenance contracts

Season: Steady, with more calls in summer and the monsoon when water quality changes.

Competition: Brand service centres, app-based services and freelance technicians. Showing TDS readings, using good spares and remembering service dates build loyalty.

Risks and how to handle them

Poor-quality spares cause complaints

Buy filters and membranes from reliable distributors and tell customers the brand you fit.

Slow growth of the customer base

Offer a low-priced first service, leave stickers and ask every customer for a referral.

A technician leaves with the customer list

Keep records and reminders in your own phone or software and stay in direct contact with customers.

Leak after service damages a customer's kitchen

Check every joint under pressure before leaving and return promptly for complaints.

Tips from the trade

  • AMCs paid in advance smooth out income across the year.
  • Selling and installing new purifiers adds income from the same customers.
  • A simple spreadsheet of customers and due dates is the most valuable asset in this business.

Questions people ask

How many customers are needed for a steady income?+

Use the calculator with your own rates. As a guide, each purifier needs two or three visits a year, so several hundred regular customers are needed to keep one technician busy.

Can I service all brands?+

Most household RO units use similar standard filters, membranes and pumps, so independent technicians service many brands. Some models use proprietary cartridges available only from the brand.

How much investment is needed to start a water purifier (ro) service business?+

About ₹1.5 lakh for a small unit: ₹95,000 for machinery and equipment, ₹10,000 for set-up costs and ₹45,024 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a water purifier (ro) service business make per month?+

At 50% of capacity, sales are about ₹70,200 a month and operating profit about ₹12,725 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹3,148, the owner keeps about ₹9,577 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for water purifier (ro) service?+

With a project cost of about ₹1.5 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹1.35 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹52,508 here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
