Rusk, or toast, is twice-baked sweet bread eaten with tea across India. A rusk unit mixes dough, bakes loaves, cools and slices them, and bakes the slices again until dry and crisp. It uses the same machines as a small bakery but has one big advantage over bread: rusk keeps for months, so there are no daily returns and it can be sold in towns far from the unit. It suits someone with a trained baker and a way to reach many small shops. The margin per kilo is modest, so the business needs volume. The hard parts are fuel cost from baking twice, breakage, and competition from large rusk brands and local bakeries.

Skills needed: A trained baker for dough and oven control; hygiene and packing discipline.

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Tea stalls and canteens
  • Kirana shops and bakeries
  • Wholesalers and distributors
  • Hostels and hospitals

Ways to sell

  • Shop-to-shop sales
  • Distributors in nearby towns
  • Loose bulk packs for tea stalls
  • Your own counter

Season: Steady all year, slightly higher in the monsoon and winter with tea.

Competition: Large rusk brands with wide distribution and many bakeries. Small units compete with bulk loose packs, local taste and shop margins.

Risks and how to handle them

Rising fuel, maida and fat costs

Run the oven with full loads, track fuel per kilo and adjust prices with the market.

Breakage in slicing and transport

Cool loaves fully before slicing, keep blades sharp, pack snugly and sell broken pieces separately.

Rusk turns soft from moisture

Bake dry, cool completely and use good pouches.

Oven breakdown

Buy from a maker with local service and keep burner spares.

Tips from the trade

  • Rusk fits well alongside bread: it uses the oven in the hours bread does not.
  • Tea stalls buy loose rusk by the kilo every few days and pay quickly.
  • Elaichi, milk and suji variants need only small recipe changes.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a rusk unit and a bakery?+

The machines are the same. A rusk unit makes only the twice-baked product, which keeps for months, so it avoids daily delivery and returns of fresh bread.

How long does rusk stay fresh?+

Commonly three to six months when fully dried and well packed. Test your own product before printing a date.

How much investment is needed to start a rusk (toast) making business?+

About ₹9.12 lakh for a small unit: ₹5.52 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹65,000 for set-up costs and ₹2.95 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a rusk (toast) making business make per month?+

At 60% of capacity, sales are about ₹3.28 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹41,100 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹19,138, the owner keeps about ₹21,962 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for rusk (toast) making?+

Rotary rack oven (₹1.9 lakh–₹4.25 lakh); Spiral dough mixer (₹76,000–₹2.15 lakh); Bread and rusk slicer (about ₹55,000).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for rusk (toast) making?+

With a project cost of about ₹9.12 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹8.21 lakh falls under Mudra Tarun. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹3.19 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
