A neighbourhood atta chakki earns in two ways: a grinding charge when customers bring their own wheat, jowar, bajri or rice, and the margin on fresh chakki atta you grind and sell in bags to homes, shops and tiffin services. The machinery is simple and cheap, and one person can run it. The catch is that margins on atta are thin, so income depends on footfall and on how much packed atta you can sell. Location matters more than anything: a shop on a busy residential lane with no other chakki nearby can do well; one tucked away will struggle. A three-phase electricity connection is needed for a commercial mill.

Skills needed: No formal qualification. You need to set and dress the stones, keep the mill clean and handle customers. A week with an experienced miller is enough to learn.

How it works

  1. Weigh the customer's grain and note it on a token.
  2. Clean the grain (remove stones and dust) in the cleaner.
  3. Grind on the stone mill; set the gap for fine or coarse flour.
  4. Weigh the flour back, collect the grinding charge.
  5. For your own atta: buy wheat in bulk, clean, grind daily, bag in 5 or 10 kg and deliver fresh.

Loan route

Mudra loan (Kishore)

Own money ₹35,106 · Loan ₹3.16 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹7,367

No collateral, no subsidy.

How Mudra works

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Households in the neighbourhood
  • Tiffin services and small restaurants
  • Kirana shops that stock fresh atta
  • Sweet shops and bakeries (besan, rice flour)

Ways to sell

  • Walk-in customers
  • Home delivery with WhatsApp orders
  • Monthly atta subscriptions
  • Supplying local shops on credit

Season: Steady all year. Busier before festivals (Diwali faral, Ganpati) when households grind besan, rice flour and bhajni.

Competition: Other chakkis nearby and packed supermarket atta. Freshness, cleanliness, honest weighing and home delivery are what bring customers back.

Risks and how to handle them

Another chakki opens close by

Choose a lane with no mill within walking distance; build regulars with delivery and subscriptions.

Neighbours complain about noise and dust

Use a dust collector, fix belt guards, keep fixed hours and get written permission from the landlord or society.

Power cuts and high electricity bills

Run during off-peak hours where tariffs allow, and keep the motor and belts serviced.

Wheat prices rise

Buy wheat after harvest (April–May) for a few months; revise atta prices promptly.

Tips from the trade

  • Add multigrain and jowar/bajri flours: they sell at better margins than plain atta.
  • A second machine (masala pulverizer) lets you grind spices during the festival season.
  • Keep the shop visibly clean. Customers judge a chakki by its floor.

Questions people ask

How much space does an atta chakki need?+

A 250–400 sq ft ground-floor shop is enough for one commercial mill, a cleaner and storage. It needs a three-phase connection and a landlord who allows a mill.

Can I run a commercial chakki on a single-phase connection?+

Only small domestic mills (1–3 HP) run on single phase. A commercial 10–20 HP stone mill needs a three-phase connection.

How much investment is needed to start a atta chakki (flour mill) business?+

About ₹3.51 lakh for a small unit: ₹2.06 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹31,000 for set-up costs and ₹1.14 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a atta chakki (flour mill) business make per month?+

At 60% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.54 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹14,592 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹7,367, the owner keeps about ₹7,225 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for atta chakki (flour mill)?+

Commercial atta chakki, 24-inch stone (₹40,000–₹80,000); Electric motor, 15 HP three-phase, with starter (₹40,000–₹70,000); Grain cleaner / destoner (₹15,000–₹40,000).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for atta chakki (flour mill)?+

With a project cost of about ₹3.51 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹3.16 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.23 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

What licences are required for atta chakki (flour mill)?+
